I also wonder, is it really plagiarism? What is anyone supposed to say and do when they discover a break-in, cartoon character or not? Nor are there any Sally Forth children worried about the fate of their stuffed tigers. This is the real point of the Calvin and Hobbes panel, and it's not even hinted at in the Sally Forth panel.
If you look at the side-by-side [1], it looks pretty plagiarized to me. They changed the words a bit but the overall plot and themes are essentially identical.
I dunno. My son and I the other day were thinking that could be more people in the United States who are interested in anime than are interested in the Calarts junk we get subjected to. Sure, Spongebob Squarepants got "good" ratings because it was always on. The interest that people show at the box office for the latest Marvel and DC films seems to show the audience isn't really there.
