I consider logic such as who is going to repair my vehicle and where am I going to get parts, how long will parts be available and how safe is this thing. Perhaps these are answered questions for the cheaper EV imports but I have not seen this articulated anywhere in a confidence inspiring level of detail especially given the current tension between China and the US. The common answer I hear is "but EV's are simpler" which tells me these people have not actually tried to work on one. They are not simple at all and the parts are quite unique and have to be ordered from China.
Build out factories in the US and stock up on all the parts first. Show me the USA tested crash safety data, remove all the drive-by-wire nonsense, make the battery packs user serviceable, remove all dial-home telemetry and maybe we can talk otherwise I see this as future throw-away toys that will flood the landfills.
Is it because they’re totally banned? Or because they had 100% tariffs on them, or because Americans don’t want a nice, reliable car with a good range for $20k?
I rode in a BYD uber in Thailand. It was pleasant, had good features and good range, cheap to buy, cheap to operate and easier to maintain than alternatives.
If you don’t think that’s a threat to American car manufacturers (and American policy makers clearly do) you’re delusional.

I guess I totally agree.
But wait why are we placing a 100% tariff on these EVs again? Are we saying that they are simultaneous not a threat and a serious threat?
