One year I was given a very small budget for team bonuses. Some of my team members were in low salary countries, some in high wage countries. So I told the high wage team members that I could either give them each a pittance, or everyone gets a title bump and the money goes to the low salary countries where it makes a real difference.
So that made everyone happy, and the next year I then had a bunch of “seniors” who were relatively low in their salary band so got priority raises :-)
