When using Windows, a desktop program is not even worth money if it only works on the exact PC it was first installed on.
Experience has shown that's about as fragile as you can get.
For mission-critical work all installed programs need to be robust enough to participate in the comprehensive backup of Windows into a single file representing everything on the C: drive at the time.
Must not fail when recovering to a different compatible PC having a different HDD or SSD of any appropriate size and manufacture, plus any type of random hardware differences under emergency conditions.
Recovery must also be completely reliable on the first attempt, as long as Windows recovers you need to be good to go instantly with no further encumbrances or friction. Just like no emergency ever happened.
Naturally must also perform ideally for instance when migrating from W10 to W11 without a hitch. That's supposed to be the easy part, when there is no emergency involved. And if the user can't confidently feel ready for Windows 12 how good an investment would a new app be about now?
Hardware ID is exactly the wrong thing to do if you have Windows, compared to relying on a more robust Windows ID of some kind that persists across Windows version updates as well as physical substitution.
