Other comments have mentioned it, even in this thread, but I am fairly certain the biggest change this will bring about (very, very sadly) is games and software from big companies being hosted server-side and streaming in content like some video games now do.
This is the future I always wanted, full control over the hardware and software I "bought" but I think we will end up lamenting our moment of empowerment in one way as the time we lost even more agency in the end.
Personal computing is increasingly under threat by government and big corporations, we all need to be vigilant and fight back.
I agree that they're going to try; however, can they succeed? I do wonder whether AI reverse-engineering could be done even in a case where the only streams you have are video, audio, and input.
Naturally, decompiling a binary would be simpler comparatively, but for models of sufficient capacity it seems the 'simpler/complex' axis has been shrinking.
If AI progress continues on a similar trajectory for even just another six months, we will just be building the games and software ourselves.

There is zero indication that that will ever happen. It takes a lot more to create a polished game like Assassin's Creed than telling a chat bot to "make it fun" while using stolen game assets. It's cute to watch mario run around in call of duty (https://www.dexerto.com/call-of-duty/call-of-duty-fan-create...) but most of the AI mashups people are putting out like that recently are basically unplayable garbage. It's fine, it's mostly for laughs and likes/views anyway, but the idea that people with zero experience in making games are going to be vibe coding games that are worth playing and on par with the best Ubisoft titles is ridiculous

Quality free game engines have been available for years. Being a game developer has gotten so accessible that the market is completely jammed with titles and discoverability is very difficult.
I get the feeling from your post that you feel “ability to write code” was something put in place by “gatekeepers” but not only is that not what “gatekeepers” means, but software developers make up a small part of a game’s production team.
The AI in these examples is mashing up existing IPs: the models, textures, animations and sounds are all pulled from other games. They're not made from scratch.
If you consider that "producing a polished game" then I can produce a polished game with a DVD burner and a Steam account.
My kids less than 10yo both, each have already created their first video game through prompting. It is actually pretty amazing to watch them explore their creativity - and how they interact with AI is fun too. The younger one always starts with "Dear AI, I want you to..."
Most of the free games on the app store and web are complete garbage. I haven't visited the Roblox child casino personally, but what I've seen of the games there were trash-tier too.
If the progression of AI continues, we might actually have LLMs re-create games from scratch just through watching them. They can already createe pretty accurate games from memory, imagine what happens if they get 10x as intelligent and capable.
Games were getting cracked anyway, it doesn't make much difference financially. A lot of games have online content as well which you can't access through this.
The speed of light and the state of the internet doesn't permit many games to be effectively streamed; even great systems like Nvidia's, optimized to within an inch of their lives, feel laggy and weird for a large chunk of users.
It is more likely that we will see a cambrian explosion of games that obviates the need for big company games in the first place. Big gaming companies are big because they need lots of developers, producers, artists, QA, and management and executive suites to manage those. You can even today get code, assets and QA for a tiny fraction of the price you have to pay humans, and that will apparently only get 'worse' for humans over time. It's going to be a very intriguing next few decades.
I would argue this actually pushes up the desire for such games. We'll be inundated with games at decent/good games, and our standards will adjust. Maybe something an imperfect analogy would be watching a decent tv series at home but going to the movie theatre for a Dennis Villeneuve movie.
Wr the streaming, totally agree. People already complain about the latency from wireless keyboards and the "low" 60fps at 4K. Streaming can't match local quality/latency, especially over wifi which is what almost everybody has.
I think the large studios who have the willingness and resources to do that are also willing to contribute to the ongoing enshittification of our digital experiences. I think small indie studios will continue to flourish.
Really? How? Marketing became impossible because of you show your work before it launches, and gets popular enough, script kiddies might use AI to clone it (poorly) and put it on the store before you can even finish the game. Demos are becoming dangerous too because of decompilation.

Over the weekend I vibe coded the SNES version of Sim City rules/assets/UI into Micropolis (the open source version of the base game) so it has the feel of nostalgia with mouse controls and modern screen size etc. It was a fun nostalgia trip.
Last weekend I had it decompile the "Kitten Cannon" Flash game and then ran (what I believe was) an exhaustive check of the 36 trillion reachable launch+power+rng combinations to see what the longest run was (I got a little over 11k feet, successfully replayed in the Flash version).
It's so cool to see modifications/enhancements to nostalgic things appear for next to no effort as much as I want rather than be limited by the time I have for it.
Unfortunately it's in a private git repo for now. I only thought "hey, maybe others will want this" after and now the SNES game assets are baked into the code and generated output so I can't really redistribute either.
Maybe the next time I spend some tokens on it I'll ask for it to convert the implementation to a "proper" runtime rip where the user can provide the source ROM and it extracts those assets live.
For older "abandonware" games, this is a huge positive. Especially for all the Flash ones. An entire ecosystem used to exist (Kongregate etc.) which was killed off by the ending of the Flash plugin.
For everything else .. well, it's hugely useful to be on one side of it. I was just today getting codex to explain why the Mac and Windows versions of a library I am using behave differently, which it does by decompiling them. We've yet to see how this pans out downstream, but it's quite likely there will be some sort of retaliatory closing of hardware to attempt to fight it.

I particularly enjoy the narrative around video game decompilation because it's a continuation of what we see in the emulation communities. People that are passionate about certain experiences and want to learn more about the way they're implemented underneath and how it relates to hardware they have access to.
It traditionally involves investing incredible amounts of time and effort and intelligence, but what I think AI does most encouragingly is allows people to access more complex, more modern, more high-performance technologies and interact with them in the same creative and explorational way.
Over the weekend, I was curious about the state of open source touch-based HID support as it compares to the state of proprietary market leaders. I tasked an agent with decompiling and analyzing firmware blobs from the systems I was interested in, and now I have an early alpha version of the most robust source-available multi touch implementation.
There are obviously some legal and perhaps even ethical considerations worth reviewing before considering publishing anything like this, but we have reached the point that proprietary software is essentially open source.
The most interesting aspect, I think, is that we can now change the games as we like.
I want Animal Crossing to have an infinite world. I want it to be an MMO. I want the animals to have much better intelligence - for example, if I'm a bad neighbor, maybe they should team-up against me.
Zelda MMO will also be cool. It's just a matter of time. Like two weeks.

The barrier for creating games is already so low it’s underground. Consider the following tools:
- Deck of cards
- 3d printers
- Printing services
And yet, while there are many games available because of these tools, a very, very small minority of those games are worth playing. I’m bearish on this having any meaningful impact on the quantity of high-quality games, just like the Roblox game engine hasn’t had any meaningful impact.
I think the biggest things to come out of asset reuse / engine / remixing are probably DOTA (WC3), ARMA/Day Z, and to a lesser extent Garry’s Mod. Which are the exception that prove the rule given that there have been so many games and engines that have lowered the barrier for game creation.
Edit: maybe you can also give credit to StarCraft for spawning the Tower Defense genre (Turret Defense was the original).
An interesting lesson people will learn is that what we, with child-like wonder, believe will be cool, will turn out to just be a Disneyland of propertyhodgepodge which will not make for an interesting game per-se.

Oh. Well - if it's an MMO you control what the world may contain via the server. They can add stuff to their local version, sure, but others won't see it unless they want to.
They can create their own world but then they need to get people to migrate to it.
Nintendo is pretty litigious and protective of their IP. A "Zelda MMO" would get a cease-and-desist letter that would make the authors' heads spin so quickly they'd travel back in time where they'd be dead.
It's an AMAZING time for mods. The list of mods for games that support it is growing fast. I would start listing them but I'm sure you can check your favorite game and just see for yourself. What I don't care for is Nexusmods. More and more people are getting into indie game dev with the support of AI now and while yes it will produce more slop and crappy games, it will also produce some really good new ones. We need more NEW franchises.
There's a lot of funky protections (not encryption, which is well understood, but only "breakable" with leaked/extracted keys) for blurays and its beyond easy to sic AI on blurays and not just shortcut the protection mechanism or the like, but fully understand everything they are doing to remove it cleanly.
I recently decompiled Oregon Trail II, it's a pretty interesting experience, you get to learn a tonne about the game you used to play, and how it works under the hood. Came across a few bugs and unused assets too, which was cool to see.
I ended up coding coding up a fully interactive version stream on twitch. Unfortunately the Twitch extension I made to make it interactive is still pending review by Twitch, but I can manually add anything keen enough to the allow list.

People have always been able to steal PC games. There's an entire genre (keygen chiptunes) of music that came from it. I guess this will make it easier to do so, but why do we think suddenly nobody will buy games anymore? I can buy that this might hurt the industry but "the end of AAA gaming" seems extreme?
Single player PC games are a small fraction of the market these days, and once people have a job, they are generally happy to pay for the things they like.
I think the "clean room" Photoshop example is much more interesting because Photoshop is far more expensive and Adobe has a semi-antagonistic relationship with creatives.
Photoshop already has alternatives (including open source ones) that can replace it. I'm more interested in seeing if this helps make commercial software without multiple free alternatives more accessible.
What I hope is that we don't just end up with a bunch of vibe coded clones, that may or may not contain AI introduced bugs or even malware, that get uploaded without being run/tested and then become instantly abandoned. Instead, I hope that AI's ability to help decompile software helps people develop open source projects that are maintained and further developed to go beyond what the commercial software was capable of.
Nail on the head, this is new. When someone can steal your release date then why bother making a game? Make a game, release a demo, demo is stolen and published the same week, 6 months before the dev was ready to release.
Demos are (up until this week) the #1 for studios to do marketing.
Marketing will change now, to more socials being required (YT etc), and even then only small bits here and there as decomp will happen from video as well.
The marketplaces that adapt to this and enable devs will help, hopefully.

I have an agent pulling apart a game right now with a Ghidra MCP server. It's incredible watching it do in an hour what took me literal weeks before AI. I was never a reverse engineering rockstar but now I don't have to be.
I wonder how AI handles stuff like Denuvo DRM? I've been building alternative clients for some software I regularly use, and AI is a master in using gdb to find keys, understanding how to construct signatures, hashes, etc.
I have been using and writing exclusively open source software for going on a decade now. I left multiple employers because I refused to use or write proprietary code for them for any amount of money. Anyone that wants my skillsets needs to accept the results will be open. A lot fewer people are making fun of me for it these days.
I was shocked YC accepted my fully FOSS company, but YC and a lot of investors realize proprietary software is no longer a moat, and some VCs -exclusively- fund FOSS companies now seeing them as the future.
I cannot express the amount of joy and hope it gives me in this dark world that every proprietary binary anyone has ever found useful or entertaining is about to be reverse engineered and have all the tracking bullshit users do not want removed. Only useful or entertaining features will remain.
This is about to completely break a proprietary and surveillance obsessed software industry that deserves to be broken.
I am thankful to have a front row seat in Silicon Valley, and look forward to watching every single company be forced to Open Source or die.
What do you think the monetization model will be? Honest question. Some of the earlier examples of getting paid for FOSS involved selling customization services and support. But AI can now do the customization and a good deal of the support too.

People pay us because we maintain an obsessively strict security model of code review, code signing, full source bootstrapping, and trusting no single human or machine. For any of our customers to hold those standards they would need to hire a minimum of 3 experienced systems/security engineers, and paying a subscription to us is a way cheaper option.
If you want people to pay you, even for open source, you need to provide support and value no AI can match.
Even a casual technical person can now ask their own LLM agent to review the source for any spyware and it will find it in most cases if present.
That is a level of extreme agency over software that was once only available to security engineers with decades of experience like me, that is now available to almost everyone.
I wonder if they were already training AI on decompiled games. It's plausible that the large labs are already using AI to decompile existing software way before random people on the internet found out this was possible. That would also explain why some AI are oddly good at generating video games.

People keep saying that closed source software will be dead soon, but I'm pretty sure that commercial open source software will also be dead and all that will be left of a profitable profession will be some fraction of non-enumerable SaaS interactions live-streaming pixels to thin clients.
As a thought experiment, how many companies do you know that make enough positive revenue to recoup development and marketing costs from a completely open source download that doesn't rely on something other than the open source software itself for profitability, like a proprietary component or some kind of hosting or network or human support service to drive value? I can think of none.

I knew it was over when we used automatic place and route to synthesize entire CPUs in Cadence in my ECE classes in 1999 before I graduated with my degree. It already achieved 80% of the circuit density and speed as humans. Then read Genetic Programming III by John Koza 5 years later, which explained that each computer 10 years older than the previous generation, running about 100 times faster due to Moore's Law, could be made to write previous gen software automatically.
Unfortunately, GPUs don't help much with the kinds of optimization problems that I was interested in, where we really need many thousands or even millions of independent threads exploring enormous search spaces using multicore CPUs with local memories. Gradient descent is one way to do that, but IMHO it's one of the hardest ways, requiring the most bare hands effort and brute force. That's why neural nets that actually worked took 25 years to manifest.
So imagine knowing how to basically grow computer hardware and software organically with self-training/improvement in the late 90s and early 2000s, only to be stifled by the end of Moore's Law arriving in 2007 when smartphones chased the profit in cost/power reduction of CPUs and devoted most all remaining R&D to faster SIMD GPUs which didn't help MIMD (multiple instruction multiple data) workloads.
After working so hard for so many years and decades, only to tread water making rent, some part of me welcomes watching the world burn. Now everyone else will get to enjoy the precarious feeling of having the skills to do real work, only to be forced not to at some BS job that almost pays the bills.
Unless you all prove me wrong and put your potential to real use, and bring time/money/resources to the working poor, outside of the current wealth inequality pyramid scheme we pretend to call capitalism.

In any case, the other two scale up with the complexity of the game being streamed. The AAA studios can simply overwhelm with complexity and content. Especially since AI will be generating an increasing majority of the game anyway as time goes on. If it's playable for a year's worth of hours, good luck downloading enough video to replicate it.
Maybe Twitch or youtube could if they incentivised enough streamers to stream their play sessions? Of course, why would Twitch or Youtube give that dataset to you?

I don't think it's the technology OR the people that the author doesn't like—I think it's what the people produce with that technology. Namely, the slop and bots currently overwhelming the internet.
It's kind of already happening, Microsoft are slowly letting Windows die. Gamers go to either consoles or Linux. Microsoft buys up studios so that the games become console exclusive, attempting to lock Linux users out.
If Windows dies, Linux gaming will kind of go down with it. Existing games will continue to work under Wine of course but I doubt developers will do the upkeep to keep their games working on a dead platform.
Considering they just announced a laptop where the sole focus is running AI locally it definitely seems like they're not interested in letting Windows die. And anyway a lot of their money comes from enterprise where they rely on Windows to continue running some shitty old software that hasn't been updated in 30+ years. It's not going away anytime soon.

They don't need to, communities make mods to make the games continue to be playable. Dragon Age Origins needs a community-made patch to stop the game from crashing on modern systems.
And now with AI you don't even need a particularly technical skillset to do fixes like this yourself.
So the problem is that “people” writ large can be lazy, it only takes one person with initiative to open source your closed source software.
I just got let go from my job, and I was thinking yesterday about trying to start a startup around a piece of software I wrote on the side that I think has a market. But I also know that if my marketing page gets posted on HN it’s curtains for that business (since the main thing I’d be selling is software).
I think we can all agree that software is valuable, in that it provides value to us. And I know a lot of us hate when a company that should be “just providing software” tries to “pivot to services” or find another unnecessary way to get their hooks into us. But if making good software is no longer a way to make money, then the only companies left will be the ones providing “services”.
Agreed, people are lazy. So lazy, in fact, that they will try to "Make a game like WoW but in space" over and over again until the tools are good enough to simply do it.
They don't need to make all the decisions, they will take what the tool spits out and that will be the "content". For more content, they will just say, "Make an expansion and do something with black holes" and it'll be done.
Why would I buy your game when I can make my game exactly how I want it.
Why would I be the only one playing it? I'd spin up a few hundred agents to play along with me. Or make a NPC system that acts like real players. The bonus is these players are all friendly and willing to play with you no matter your gear/skill.
Add in small multiplayer, 2-6 people, and now you are basically playing modern WoW.
There is no creative decision making. And in fact, the less creativity, probably the better result--because the models are great with an exact specification.
Closed source downloadable software is "dead" unless it doesn't require you to login to their servers at the start of the game and acts as a thin client.
These publishers will find a way to lock it down for new games and tie it to their servers to run it, or have the game streamed to you; simulated via a world model or not.
You can still run it in a VM and access files on disk. Or if they're 1337 haxorz and keep the game in RAM you can still inspect RAM

Hard to say if publishers are going to want to pay the (now increased) hardware costs to stream hosted games when before the AI boom they kept failing to get the idea of the ground. Certainly I don't think we'll see it happen unless the AI bubble pops reducing hardware demand for AI.
Without decompilation, it's impossible to say that you've experienced every aspect of a game. So AI will be able to build something that approximates part of the game from video of gameplay, but it will not be able to completely build the game with reliable consistency.
Every possible thing! We can't even enumerate every possible thing in chess with a compact set of rules let alone every possible thing in something like Red Dead Redemption with unbounded complexity. "Thing" is not "what happens when you shoot an enemy". "Thing" is "what happens when you shoot this particular enemy in this particular place at this particular in-game time and this particular not-in-game time after doing this particular long sequence of other very particular things".
That's what the issue tracker is for. If someone notices a subtle difference and they want it added they'll file an issue. If nobody notices the untested space it doesn't matter.

And pirates don't really need AI do hack a game etc. All possible games have been on torrent trackers since forever.
Possibly ability to decompile and modify it would be a free marketing (from those who mod it and post videos) and only increase sales. Potentially what games should do is optimize builds for this so that mods can be easily created and shared - e.g. you buy a game and apply a bunch of mods created by ai or not.
The only reason I see is when it can hurt sales if some cool mod someone does can't be easily applied to original game and then you have no choice but to pirate it in order to play that mod.
Rockstar would be piiiiiiiiiiiiissed if they can't double-dip because GTA VI ends up being playable on PCs before christmas.
Normally they would've released the "enhanced edition" for PCs next year right around the same period of time. With the current pricing on consoles, there's a good chance a ported PC version would even cannibalize sales of their console editions.

It's certainly already possible to implement fun games with Opus 5.5 today, with no prior experience.
The idea that this will next year be possible for more polished 3D games with a larger scope is far from ridiculous.
If a community of users get together on Discord to collaborate on a project, I see no reason why this should not work.

The AI in these examples is mashing up existing IPs: the models, textures, animations and sounds are all pulled from other games. They're not made from scratch.

My kids less than 10yo both, each have already created their first video game through prompting. It is actually pretty amazing to watch them explore their creativity - and how they interact with AI is fun too. The younger one always starts with "Dear AI, I want you to..."

If the progression of AI continues, we might actually have LLMs re-create games from scratch just through watching them. They can already createe pretty accurate games from memory, imagine what happens if they get 10x as intelligent and capable.

The speed of light and the state of the internet doesn't permit many games to be effectively streamed; even great systems like Nvidia's, optimized to within an inch of their lives, feel laggy and weird for a large chunk of users.
It is more likely that we will see a cambrian explosion of games that obviates the need for big company games in the first place. Big gaming companies are big because they need lots of developers, producers, artists, QA, and management and executive suites to manage those. You can even today get code, assets and QA for a tiny fraction of the price you have to pay humans, and that will apparently only get 'worse' for humans over time. It's going to be a very intriguing next few decades.
I would argue this actually pushes up the desire for such games. We'll be inundated with games at decent/good games, and our standards will adjust. Maybe something an imperfect analogy would be watching a decent tv series at home but going to the movie theatre for a Dennis Villeneuve movie.
Wr the streaming, totally agree. People already complain about the latency from wireless keyboards and the "low" 60fps at 4K. Streaming can't match local quality/latency, especially over wifi which is what almost everybody has.
I think the large studios who have the willingness and resources to do that are also willing to contribute to the ongoing enshittification of our digital experiences. I think small indie studios will continue to flourish.

Marketing became impossible because of you show your work before it launches, and gets popular enough, script kiddies might use AI to clone it (poorly) and put it on the store before you can even finish the game. Over the weekend I vibe coded the SNES version of Sim City rules/assets/UI into Micropolis (the open source version of the base game) so it has the feel of nostalgia with mouse controls and modern screen size etc. It was a fun nostalgia trip.
Last weekend I had it decompile the "Kitten Cannon" Flash game and then ran (what I believe was) an exhaustive check of the 36 trillion reachable launch+power+rng combinations to see what the longest run was (I got a little over 11k feet, successfully replayed in the Flash version).
It's so cool to see modifications/enhancements to nostalgic things appear for next to no effort as much as I want rather than be limited by the time I have for it.

Do you have the SimCity modification uploaded anywhere? I loved the SNES version of that game.
Unfortunately it's in a private git repo for now. I only thought "hey, maybe others will want this" after and now the SNES game assets are baked into the code and generated output so I can't really redistribute either.
Maybe the next time I spend some tokens on it I'll ask for it to convert the implementation to a "proper" runtime rip where the user can provide the source ROM and it extracts those assets live.
Or have it generate new assets you can distribute yourself.

For older "abandonware" games, this is a huge positive. Especially for all the Flash ones. An entire ecosystem used to exist (Kongregate etc.) which was killed off by the ending of the Flash plugin.
For everything else .. well, it's hugely useful to be on one side of it. I was just today getting codex to explain why the Mac and Windows versions of a library I am using behave differently, which it does by decompiling them. We've yet to see how this pans out downstream, but it's quite likely there will be some sort of retaliatory closing of hardware to attempt to fight it.

I particularly enjoy the narrative around video game decompilation because it's a continuation of what we see in the emulation communities. People that are passionate about certain experiences and want to learn more about the way they're implemented underneath and how it relates to hardware they have access to.
It traditionally involves investing incredible amounts of time and effort and intelligence, but what I think AI does most encouragingly is allows people to access more complex, more modern, more high-performance technologies and interact with them in the same creative and explorational way.
Over the weekend, I was curious about the state of open source touch-based HID support as it compares to the state of proprietary market leaders. I tasked an agent with decompiling and analyzing firmware blobs from the systems I was interested in, and now I have an early alpha version of the most robust source-available multi touch implementation.
There are obviously some legal and perhaps even ethical considerations worth reviewing before considering publishing anything like this, but we have reached the point that proprietary software is essentially open source.
The most interesting aspect, I think, is that we can now change the games as we like.
I want Animal Crossing to have an infinite world. I want it to be an MMO. I want the animals to have much better intelligence - for example, if I'm a bad neighbor, maybe they should team-up against me.
Zelda MMO will also be cool. It's just a matter of time. Like two weeks.

Oh. Well - if it's an MMO you control what the world may contain via the server. They can add stuff to their local version, sure, but others won't see it unless they want to.
They can create their own world but then they need to get people to migrate to it.
Nintendo is pretty litigious and protective of their IP. A "Zelda MMO" would get a cease-and-desist letter that would make the authors' heads spin so quickly they'd travel back in time where they'd be dead.

It's an AMAZING time for mods. The list of mods for games that support it is growing fast. I would start listing them but I'm sure you can check your favorite game and just see for yourself. What I don't care for is Nexusmods. More and more people are getting into indie game dev with the support of AI now and while yes it will produce more slop and crappy games, it will also produce some really good new ones. We need more NEW franchises.
There's a lot of funky protections (not encryption, which is well understood, but only "breakable" with leaked/extracted keys) for blurays and its beyond easy to sic AI on blurays and not just shortcut the protection mechanism or the like, but fully understand everything they are doing to remove it cleanly.
I recently decompiled Oregon Trail II, it's a pretty interesting experience, you get to learn a tonne about the game you used to play, and how it works under the hood. Came across a few bugs and unused assets too, which was cool to see.

People have always been able to steal PC games. There's an entire genre (keygen chiptunes) of music that came from it. I guess this will make it easier to do so, but why do we think suddenly nobody will buy games anymore? I can buy that this might hurt the industry but "the end of AAA gaming" seems extreme?

Single player PC games are a small fraction of the market these days, and once people have a job, they are generally happy to pay for the things they like.
I think the "clean room" Photoshop example is much more interesting because Photoshop is far more expensive and Adobe has a semi-antagonistic relationship with creatives.
Photoshop already has alternatives (including open source ones) that can replace it. I'm more interested in seeing if this helps make commercial software without multiple free alternatives more accessible.
What I hope is that we don't just end up with a bunch of vibe coded clones, that may or may not contain AI introduced bugs or even malware, that get uploaded without being run/tested and then become instantly abandoned. Instead, I hope that AI's ability to help decompile software helps people develop open source projects that are maintained and further developed to go beyond what the commercial software was capable of.

Nail on the head, this is new. When someone can steal your release date then why bother making a game? Make a game, release a demo, demo is stolen and published the same week, 6 months before the dev was ready to release.
Demos are (up until this week) the #1 for studios to do marketing.
Marketing will change now, to more socials being required (YT etc), and even then only small bits here and there as decomp will happen from video as well.

I have an agent pulling apart a game right now with a Ghidra MCP server. It's incredible watching it do in an hour what took me literal weeks before AI. I was never a reverse engineering rockstar but now I don't have to be.

I wonder how AI handles stuff like Denuvo DRM? I've been building alternative clients for some software I regularly use, and AI is a master in using gdb to find keys, understanding how to construct signatures, hashes, etc.
I have been using and writing exclusively open source software for going on a decade now. I left multiple employers because I refused to use or write proprietary code for them for any amount of money. Anyone that wants my skillsets needs to accept the results will be open. A lot fewer people are making fun of me for it these days.
I was shocked YC accepted my fully FOSS company, but YC and a lot of investors realize proprietary software is no longer a moat, and some VCs -exclusively- fund FOSS companies now seeing them as the future.
I cannot express the amount of joy and hope it gives me in this dark world that every proprietary binary anyone has ever found useful or entertaining is about to be reverse engineered and have all the tracking bullshit users do not want removed. Only useful or entertaining features will remain.
This is about to completely break a proprietary and surveillance obsessed software industry that deserves to be broken.

People pay us because we maintain an obsessively strict security model of code review, code signing, full source bootstrapping, and trusting no single human or machine. For any of our customers to hold those standards they would need to hire a minimum of 3 experienced systems/security engineers, and paying a subscription to us is a way cheaper option.
If you want people to pay you, even for open source, you need to provide support and value no AI can match.

Even a casual technical person can now ask their own LLM agent to review the source for any spyware and it will find it in most cases if present.
That is a level of extreme agency over software that was once only available to security engineers with decades of experience like me, that is now available to almost everyone.

People keep saying that closed source software will be dead soon, but I'm pretty sure that commercial open source software will also be dead and all that will be left of a profitable profession will be some fraction of non-enumerable SaaS interactions live-streaming pixels to thin clients.
As a thought experiment, how many companies do you know that make enough positive revenue to recoup development and marketing costs from a completely open source download that doesn't rely on something other than the open source software itself for profitability, like a proprietary component or some kind of hosting or network or human support service to drive value? I can think of none.

I've been decompiling a bunch of games for the past year. It's insane what it can do, and honestly even Opus 4.5 was already really good at this.

It's funny to me that people don't realize it's over yet. Not haha funny, but more like when you meet someone who thinks the moon landings were faked.
I knew it was over when we used automatic place and route to synthesize entire CPUs in Cadence in my ECE classes in 1999 before I graduated with my degree. It already achieved 80% of the circuit density and speed as humans. Then read Genetic Programming III by John Koza 5 years later, which explained that each computer 10 years older than the previous generation, running about 100 times faster due to Moore's Law, could be made to write previous gen software automatically.
Unfortunately, GPUs don't help much with the kinds of optimization problems that I was interested in, where we really need many thousands or even millions of independent threads exploring enormous search spaces using multicore CPUs with local memories. Gradient descent is one way to do that, but IMHO it's one of the hardest ways, requiring the most bare hands effort and brute force. That's why neural nets that actually worked took 25 years to manifest.
So imagine knowing how to basically grow computer hardware and software organically with self-training/improvement in the late 90s and early 2000s, only to be stifled by the end of Moore's Law arriving in 2007 when smartphones chased the profit in cost/power reduction of CPUs and devoted most all remaining R&D to faster SIMD GPUs which didn't help MIMD (multiple instruction multiple data) workloads.
After working so hard for so many years and decades, only to tread water making rent, some part of me welcomes watching the world burn. Now everyone else will get to enjoy the precarious feeling of having the skills to do real work, only to be forced not to at some BS job that almost pays the bills.
Unless you all prove me wrong and put your potential to real use, and bring time/money/resources to the working poor, outside of the current wealth inequality pyramid scheme we pretend to call capitalism.

at some point you can simulate decompiling a game purely from enough video footage of the game being played.
But you would need to collect that volume of footage. Then create a training set. Then pay for training.
Only one of those gets cheaper and faster with time. (And that's just me guessing it will get cheaper. I could be wrong.)
In any case, the other two scale up with the complexity of the game being streamed. The AAA studios can simply overwhelm with complexity and content. Especially since AI will be generating an increasing majority of the game anyway as time goes on. If it's playable for a year's worth of hours, good luck downloading enough video to replicate it.
Maybe Twitch or youtube could if they incentivised enough streamers to stream their play sessions? Of course, why would Twitch or Youtube give that dataset to you?

Cloud gaming is going to be pushed hard. You’ll pay more and own nothing.
It's kind of already happening, Microsoft are slowly letting Windows die. Gamers go to either consoles or Linux. Microsoft buys up studios so that the games become console exclusive, attempting to lock Linux users out.
If Windows dies, Linux gaming will kind of go down with it. Existing games will continue to work under Wine of course but I doubt developers will do the upkeep to keep their games working on a dead platform.

Considering they just announced a laptop where the sole focus is running AI locally it definitely seems like they're not interested in letting Windows die. And anyway a lot of their money comes from enterprise where they rely on Windows to continue running some shitty old software that hasn't been updated in 30+ years. It's not going away anytime soon.

They don't need to, communities make mods to make the games continue to be playable. Dragon Age Origins needs a community-made patch to stop the game from crashing on modern systems.

But I also know that if my marketing page gets posted on HN it’s curtains for that business (since the main thing I’d be selling is software).
I think we can all agree that software is valuable, in that it provides value to us. And I know a lot of us hate when a company that should be “just providing software” tries to “pivot to services” or find another unnecessary way to get their hooks into us. But if making good software is no longer a way to make money, then the only companies left will be the ones providing “services”.

When it comes to MMOs, your game is no fun if you're the only one playing it. Maybe this will lead to some stickiness. But a lot is going to change.
Why would I be the only one playing it? I'd spin up a few hundred agents to play along with me. Or make a NPC system that acts like real players. The bonus is these players are all friendly and willing to play with you no matter your gear/skill.
Add in small multiplayer, 2-6 people, and now you are basically playing modern WoW.

Closed source downloadable software is "dead" unless it doesn't require you to login to their servers at the start of the game and acts as a thin client.
These publishers will find a way to lock it down for new games and tie it to their servers to run it, or have the game streamed to you; simulated via a world model or not.
You can still run it in a VM and access files on disk. Or if they're 1337 haxorz and keep the game in RAM you can still inspect RAM

Without decompilation, it's impossible to say that you've experienced every aspect of a game. So AI will be able to build something that approximates part of the game from video of gameplay, but it will not be able to completely build the game with reliable consistency.
Streaming won't stop it, just have the AI play the game and do every possible thing.
Every possible thing! We can't even enumerate every possible thing in chess with a compact set of rules let alone every possible thing in something like Red Dead Redemption with unbounded complexity. "Thing" is not "what happens when you shoot an enemy". "Thing" is "what happens when you shoot this particular enemy in this particular place at this particular in-game time and this particular not-in-game time after doing this particular long sequence of other very particular things".
That's what the issue tracker is for. If someone notices a subtle difference and they want it added they'll file an issue. If nobody notices the untested space it doesn't matter.

I've been learning by using REA to decompile and reverse-engineer older games and software.
It's surprisingly powerful.
Decompiling is not same as pirating though.
In order do decompile you already need a game. If you usually buy games you'd still buy one. If you pirate games - you'd still pirate it.

Potentially what games should do is optimize builds for this so that mods can be easily created and shared - e.g. you buy a game and apply a bunch of mods created by ai or not.
The only reason I see is when it can hurt sales if some cool mod someone does can't be easily applied to original game and then you have no choice but to pirate it in order to play that mod.
Rockstar would be piiiiiiiiiiiiissed if they can't double-dip because GTA VI ends up being playable on PCs before christmas.
Normally they would've released the "enhanced edition" for PCs next year right around the same period of time. With the current pricing on consoles, there's a good chance a ported PC version would even cannibalize sales of their console editions.

It is not a joke! The naming is so bad so it sounds like a joke. So people like the author assume it is a joke and move on without suing them. They are counting on that.
